As a woman I have been frustrated for quite a while regarding how women are treated in the political atmosphere and it isn't what you think.
I very much dislike what modern feminism has done to women. Originally, feminists fought for equality as human beings. We won the right to vote. We killed the societal idea that we belong in the kitchen, barefoot and pregnant. We forced men to realize that we can drive race cars and are worthy contemporaries in the work force. All of that is great. But then, we ran out of things to fight for in my opinion. Sure there are things here and there that could be improved upon but for all intents and purposes, in America, women are equal. We can own our own homes, not get married, not have children, work, well - you get the idea.
So what do feminists do when the battlefield isn't as full of conflict as it used to be?
It feels like we have been following a map going to an unknown destination then we overshoot it and wind up crashing and causing a dumpster fire. (No, that isn't a joke about female drivers. LOL) What was once a good idea with good intentions, political correctness and affirmative action have run their course and now are starting to sour. But of course, we know that this always happens when the government is charged in righting wrongs. What should be society's job in correcting course becomes a badly thought out plan to make people happy put into place by a body whose job was never to be a societal moral compass. There are consequences that weren't considered and blanket assumptions are made for everyone in every state regardless of opportunity and background. What might be important to someone in a rural area is not even a concern to someone in a major city.
How do I tie this into the dumpster fire that I see as modern day feminists, you ask? Right now, it is the whole #MeToo and #BelieveAllWomen trends happening in social media. For the past week or so, I have seen some blatant and disgusting behavior coming from one side of the American political spectrum. Women have been dealing with sexual assault since the beginning of time. At some points in history it has been acceptable (and still is in some countries) but in modern times pretty much everyone can agree that sexual assault on anyone is not right. But we keep re-defining what sexual assault is. I remember doing training in the late 90's, early 2000's about what sexual harassment was in the workplace. It was defined as anything that makes another person feel uncomfortable. That was it. Anything that makes another person uncomfortable in the workplace could get you fired whether it be a "hey Susan, you look nice today" or even commenting on how nice the perfume was that a woman was wearing. I have worked everywhere from a fast food joint, a warehouse, retail, and the office and I can tell you - there are guys in every location who will say something that might make you feel uncomfortable but their intention was just to compliment you. And I have worked with absolute pigs who try to feel you up in the breakroom. Now, in my opinion, one of these guys is perfectly safe and the other should get fired. Guess which one! But in today's world, both could get fired and many times it is the nice guy who was just trying to make your day.
I currently am a rideshare driver. I love it. I get to talk to all kinds of different people from all over the world. Recently I had a Ukrainian female passenger living in Washington State on a temporary work visa. She was so confused by what feminism was and why it was so prevalent in its current state. She was telling me that in Europe, if a woman is carrying boxes there is no man in her vicinity that wouldn't drop everything to help her out. We have guys so scared now here in the U.S. that they are timid about even holding a door open for women in fear of a backlash. My passenger also commented about how her makeup was flawless that day (it really was nicely done) and she got all kinds of compliments from her female coworkers but not one guy commented. I found myself torn on that one - I don't know many guys who notice makeup unless it looks hideous. But I told her that men are trained in the U.S. to not comment on a woman's appearance, good or bad, because he could get hammered with sexual harassment complaints. She didn't like it. It was the one complaint she had about America. Where she was from, at least as far as her experience was, women are appreciated and their femininity is celebrated and cherished.
It is ok to want to have the independence and desire to do "it" without a man, whatever that "it" is. But it doesn't mean that a guy is evil or trying to degrade a woman just because he wants to open her door. Throughout history the male human has been the protector and provider. It is written into their evolutionary DNA. To vilify him because he is doing what comes as his respect for the female is just wrong.
Yes, I go all over the place - you can blame my wandering mind - but bottom line is, this female still absolutely loves an alpha male who has the instinct to protect her and provide. I don't mind compliments and as long as they aren't graphic, I will accept it with appreciation!
